Parents are becoming more and more comfortable with allowing (and wanting/needing) kids to use their mobile devices, hence the explosion of kids apps in the App Store. I got bored counting the pages of apps for kids but my guess is there are somewhere between 10,000 and 50,000 apps for kids, not counting games that kids play. I estimate that half of smart mobile device owners have kids in the house so that is your total potential audience. In the US that's probably 20-25M households. As a previous post stated, iPad is probably the ideal device target as it's more easily shared than a phone and more kid friendly than Android. That will take your audience down some but I've also read that a very high (70%+) percent of iPad parents are comfortable allowing their kids to use the device. Bottom line, this is a big and growing space. Keep in mind, however, another stat that suggests over 80% of app downloads are free apps. Parents are more likely to pay for a quality kids app but the majority of them in the app store are still free/freemium.
