Is it true that the app market is saturated to the point where it is impossible for an indie mobile game developer to make a good living?

No; if anyone views anything as impossible, then they’re already setting themself up for failure. Almost every market is saturated: from fashion, to food to PC gaming. It’s less about picking an unsaturated market, and more about trying to cut through the noise. It’s the apps that persevere that grow (and pay their bills).
I work for the app store optimization company Gummicube, where we work with developers everyday, trying to expand their app’s visibility and increase their downloads.
There’s several factors that can affect an app’s success, such as user experience, marketing and app maintenance, just to name a few. A common pitfall is that many apps lack optimized metadata, which hurts their chances of being found in the first place.
Both Apple and Google give developers metadata fields to explain their app (i.e. the Title, Subtitle, Short Description, etc). The algorithms crawl these fields for keywords, trying to understand where to rank your app. A trick to cutting through saturated markets is by picking the right keywords.
The issue is that developers are picking the wrong keywords, or even leaving the metadata fields blank.
Using the right keywords won’t automatically net you a million dollars or make you an overnight success, but it will put you on the right track to increasing your impressions, which can lead to downloads which hopefully leads to revenue.
If you’re interested in learning more, I provided a link to a recent article on some best practices below:
Overall, whatever your timeline or pay expectations are, I can’t guarantee you’ll get. What I can tell you is that the market is NEVER too saturated to make a living in.
