How big is the app market for kids?

No overall figures but some interesting statistics here, that I've heard from a few kids apps developers:

1. You can reach the top 10 of the iTunes Paid Educational Apps chart, with just 400-600 downloads a day. This is at least 10 times easier than the Games chart.

2. There's a higher frequency of more apps that cost higher than the usual $0.99 or $1.99. Parents are more likely to seek out better apps for their kids, and more willing to pay for the quality. One developer mentioned that his app cost $4.99, climbed high, then started falling. He slashed the price to $2.99, and it fell even faster. He then changed it back to $4.99, and it went up again.

3. In general, there's a much smaller market, but developers can compensate with higher priced apps, which probably don't take as much time and effort to produce as Infinity Blade or Modern Combat.

4. Perhaps because of the smaller market size in the kid's apps development industry, I've also come across much a higher frequency of smaller (2-3 staff) studios. Many of them aren't full time, and quite a number of them are just "iPhone Moms", who know nothing about programming and operate only as kids apps idea factories who draw up concepts and outsource their development.
